Continuing our series on supporting Scotland’s homelessness charities, we would like to showcase Shelter Scotland, the second charity to receive one of our £3,750 donations.
Shelter Scotland was formed in 1968 and lies behind the foundation of several housing associations. Through advice, support and legal services, Shelter Scotland helps people struggling with bad housing or homelessness. They provide advice on what people’s housing rights are, how homelessness can be avoided and how to get help, as well as advice on relationship breakdown and domestic abuse, eviction and mortgage repossession.
Shelter Scotland campaign on many housing issues, with successful campaigning leading to changes in the legislation, and council leaders pledging to provide and build more social housing. The charity helps thousands of households every year through face to face services and they receive millions of visits to their online advice pages from people in crisis seeking help.
Unfortunately, right now in Scotland, a household becomes homeless every 16 minutes and as thousands of people face the fear and uncertainty of having nowhere safe to call home, Shelter Scotland’s helpline is so busy, the charity is only able to answer 1 in every 4 calls it receives. The charity wants to make sure everyone can access advice when they need it most.
Donations to the charity allow them to invest in new projects, services and campaigns so HPMS is very pleased to be able to help Shelter Scotland to fight the housing emergency and assist them in achieving their vision of a safe, secure and affordable home for everyone.
Upon receipt of our donation, Sam Myers, Community Fundraiser for Shelter Scotland, said:
“Thank you so much for your recent generosity to Shelter Scotland. Your donation of £3,750 will go a long way in our fight for housing justice.
Every penny donated helps us be there for people facing homelessness and we’re so grateful.
Support such as yours helps us be there so people don’t have to face the threat of homelessness alone.”
